When I was pregnant with Sydney, a morning dove made a nest right outside her nursery window. Every day I would check on the Mama bird, watch her sit in the blazing sun and quiver her feathers to stay cool...essentially watching her be uncomfortable to keep her babies safe. I felt a real bond with this Mommy dove.
The following summer, another nest was made outside of Sydney's bedroom. I found this odd because prior to the nest from the previous year, I'd never had a bird's nest on my house. We'd lived in this house for five years.
Now we live in a new house, and we have a new nest - a robin's nest this time. Sydney loves to visit the nest and watch the Mama bird keep her babies safe, warm and fed. She asks about them having their dinner and is their Daddy at work and says, "shhh" because they're sleeping.
These birds have become very symbolic to us and are a very sweet addition to our evenings. We're happy to have them.
