I love my husband. He's a good man. He's a great, loving, fun dad, and gives our girls fantastic energy. He's a wonderful parenting partner too - particularly after the birth of our Natty - by helping me with dinner, bedtime routines, getting Sydney dressed in the morning... But I have no idea how in the world he becomes deaf in the middle of the night to our baby's crying. I could hook the monitor up to some Bose headphones, put them over his head, turn the volume to 10 and he'd still sleep through it!
I am truly dumbfounded every morning, as I sluggishly move about the house, when he asks me if Natty slept through the night again...when I was up at 1:00 a.m., 4:00 a.m., and 4:50 a.m. I look at him with my glazed over bloodshot eyes and say, "yeah, she's our little miracle sleeper!"
I'm not sure if it's the petocin drip or the epidural needle that injects a chemical for Mommy's to develop bionic ears - but we've all got them. I've surveyed this, and I know I'm not the only mom that flies out of bed the millisecond her baby begins that deep breath in before the cry starts. My Mom-dar (Mommy radar) is on the highest setting. In fact, my ears aren't attached to my head anymore. One ear is in my older daughter's room at night, the other in my baby's crib.
It's not just at night either. My Mom-dar picks up my daughter using her crayons on the table in her playroom as I fry up hamburger for dinner in the kitchen. It picks up her shoes and her standing on the couch as I try to grab a quick potty break. It picks up her leaning in to pinch her baby sister's cheeks as I run to go grab a fresh diaper from the next room.
Yes it's amazing to have super power hearing. Though sometimes it would be nice to turn it off. I'd like to watch an episode of Idol without the background sounds of Twinkle Twinkle. A deep, quiet sleep wouldn't be bad either.
On the bright side, it's a powerful thing to bust your kid when they think they're going to get away with something. I sure hope my Mom-dar upgrades over the years so my girls are mystified that I manage to be at the back door every time they try to sneak out! I've got my ears on you! :)
