So Friday morning, I had JUST gotten to my desk and my phone rings. I see through my display phone that it is my daughter's day care. Every time I see this number, my heart goes up my throat. The daycare, though, has always had a lead in sentence when I pick up the phone. They say, "hi it's your daycare, don't worry, everything is fine." Well on this particular day, I didn't get that sentence. The three seconds that it took the gal who called me to get to the point was the longest three seconds of my life.
Apparently Sydney was holding a food tray and tripped and the tray hit her right under her eye. The message I got was she'll be lucky to not have a black eye. After enough of these injury calls now, the best I can do is say, "is she OK? Do I need to come and get her?" When they say she's fine, don't worry, then I just sit with anxiety and guilt ALL DAY LONG at my desk and wait to see the results.
When I picked her up that night, yep, pretty nasty little shiner. While I felt badly for her, and I gave her extra hugs and kisses that night, my next thought was, oh boy, we're going out of town this weekend. I wonder how many people are going to see her eye and consider calling child protective services on us?
It never fails, if my daughter gets hurt it's either right before it's picture time or right before we'll be surrounded by a large group of strangers leaving every single one of them wondering when she goes into her little shy mode - oh, I hope that child is OK. And then I have to spend all of my time making sure Patient Mommy stays alert.
Cue the restaurant scene:
"No Mommy, I don't want to eat my chicken."
"Yes, Honey, please eat your chicken."
"No, I want cookies!"
"Cookies?! You're not gonna get any cookies...if you think...... I mean, Honey, big girls eat their chicken and then maybe get cookies for dessert." Meanwhile the waitress heard "Cookies! why I oughta give you another smack upside the head for being so stupid like when you knocked over Mommy's beer in the car."
You get the idea. Luckily my little Bruiser was a very good girl this weekend. We had a great trip, no accidents, injuries... Hopefully we can make it through this week boo boo free... we have family coming next weekend.
